DIY Hot Cocoa Mix

This mix is an easy and quick method with only 3 ingredients and very simple measuring. It makes several cups of mix (You'll need a 2-3 quart container to store it all.)

It's a great base mix. After adding your mix to your cup you can jazz it up with vanilla, peppermint, candy canes, creamer, marshmallows, chocolate chips, whatever your heart desires.

  • 1 Can Cocoa Powder Mine is 8 ounces, but you'll be using ratios so size doesn't matter besides how much total mix it will make
  • Sugar
  • Instant Dry Milk Powder


  1. So easy- You'll be mixing 1 can of cocoa, 1 can of sugar, and 2 cans of dry milk.  Simple dump your cocoa into a bowl or container, then use the same cocoa can to measure your sugar, and again to measure your dry milk! No measuring cups needed. When you're done simply toss the cocoa can in the recycling bin, OR make something awesome with it, your choice!

  2. Dump your ingredients in and either pulse in a blender, food processor, OR send through a flour sifter. IF You simply mix it in a bowl it will be hard to blend in when you are making a cup. You'll get watery cocoa with weird gloop at the bottom. You definitely want to blend it up somehow. 

  3. Store in an airtight container. You will need about 2 Tablespoons of the mix for a standard coffee mug, or 3 for a larger travel mug.  Just top with boiling water and stir well. 

Recipe Notes

If you'd like to make less mix use smaller ratios! Just remember 1 part each of cocoa and sugar and 2 parts of dry milk. Using 1/2 T of each of cocoa and sugar and 1 T of dry milk will make exactly one mug full. 

For a rich and creamy cup measure your mix into a mug, add just enough cream, milk, or half n half to make a thick mix. Then top with boiling water.
